I sit here in a an oft-played out saga. I have devoted the next three days to finishing up lots of bits in my dissertation. I arise early and after a short wander around the kitchen, settle into 'work' at my desk.
Yet if the land is the source of much of my insight, why do I not go for a walk outside first? Or take my notebook out onto the deck to write? Discourses of work, and what gets to count as legitimate work – whether research methodologies, methods or re-presentation of my meaning-making, continually thwart my attempts and desires to walk and talk with animate Earth.
My conversation with Jeff (and many other fellow travelers in this dissertation journey) suggests I am not alone. The computer often 'wins'.
